NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News police responded to a shooting inside a store at Patrick Henry Mall that left one man dead Saturday, authorities said.

Officers arrived at 10:52 a.m., just one minute after the shooting was reported. They found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died.

"Officers were already on scene. One of the reasons they were here so quick is [because] during the holiday season, with all the shopping areas that we have going on, we have what we call holiday patrols," Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said. "Two officers came to the mall to kind of do a quick check to make sure it was OK before they checked other locations. So within one minute, we were at the scene."
