A significant operation targeting knife crime in Greater Manchester has resulted in the arrest of 116 individuals. The initiative, which took place during a national week of action from 17 to 23 November, also led to the recovery of 63 dangerous knives across the city. Superintendent Richard Thompson, who oversees the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) response to knife crime and serious violence, emphasised the force's commitment to addressing this pressing issue. He stated, "Across our neighbourhood and responses teams, alongside our dedicated knife crime team Operation Venture; officers made 116 arrests and recovered 63 knives from a combination of stop searches, search warrants and weapon sweeps." In addition to the arrests, GMP engaged with 118 retailers to educate them on the proper display of knives. Superintendent Thompson noted, "Engaging with retailers is a critical part of what we do as preventing access to knives at the point of sale has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of harm." He highlighted the importance of ensuring that knives are clearly covered by CCTV to deter potential offenders. The police also conducted 39 school engagements aimed at educating young people about the dangers of knife crime. These sessions included discussions on the importance of reporting concerns to trusted adults. During these visits, officers promoted Fearless, the youth service of the independent charity Crimestoppers. Kate Green, Deputy Mayor for Safer and Stronger Communities, praised the efforts of GMP, stating, "These results are a testament to the proactive work of GMP to make our streets and communities safer. Positive community engagement work is key to preventing young people carrying knives and tackling the root causes of this, and I am proud of the work that GMP is doing here." For those wishing to report knife crime, GMP encourages the public to call 101 or 999 in emergencies. Anonymous reports can be made through the independent charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or via their website.
