DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) - Virginia State Police are searching for a driver involved in an incident during a traffic checkpoint that left a trooper evaluated for injuries.
On Friday at 3:16 p.m., a state trooper was working a checkpoint on the ramp from Squirrel Level Road to northbound Interstate 85. The trooper asked drivers to have their IDs ready when the operator of a white Ford SUV with expired temporary tags said he would not go through the checkpoint. The trooper told the driver he had to continue and placed his hand on the SUV’s door handle.
The SUV then reversed, struck a guardrail, returned to Squirrel Level Road and fled toward Halifax Road in the City of Petersburg. Because of the troopers’ positions on the ramp, officers did not pursue the vehicle.
