OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - On this day in 1931, the Joslyn Art Museum opened to the public.
The building traces its roots back to 1928, when Sarah Joslyn donated more than three million dollars to fund an arts center in Omaha.
It was first known as the Joslyn Memorial, in honor of Sarah’s late husband.
The building at 22nd and Dodge opened to quite the crowd. More than 25,000 people attended the inauguration.
Today, the Joslyn is Nebraska’s largest art museum. Its collection of more than 12,000 objects spans five thousand years of creativity and culture.
The museum has expanded over the last nine decades. The most recent addition opened in late 2024 .
