Americans’ views of President Donald Trump appear to have shifted this month, with new survey data pointing to growing concerns about his performance in office.
Gallup said on Friday, Nov. 28, that Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 36 percent, marking the lowest point of his second term.
The latest figure reflects a drop of five points from earlier readings in which approval hovered between 40 percent and 41 percent. Disapproval has climbed to 60 percent. Trump’s previous second-term low was 37 percent in July, and his all-time low was 34 percent in 2021 at the end of his first term following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
Gallup said the November results were gathered from polling conducted between Monday, Nov. 3, and Tuesday, Nov. 25, a period that included off-year elections that favored Democrats and the longest federal government shutdown in US history, which finally ended on Tuesday, Nov. 12 after starting on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
Support for Trump declined across key political groups. Republicans’ approval rating dropped seven points to 84 percent, while independents’ approval slipped eight points to 25 percent. Gallup said the new figure for independents represents the lowest rating of Trump’s presidency. Democrats remained largely unchanged at three percent approval.
The survey also measured Trump’s ratings on nine national and international issues. His strongest marks were on crime at 43 percent, foreign affairs at 41 percent, foreign trade at 39 percent, and immigration at 37 percent.
Ratings for the economy at 36 percent, the situation in the Middle East at 33 percent, the federal budget at 31 percent, the situation in Ukraine at 31 percent, and healthcare policy at 30 percent matched or trailed his overall approval.
Gallup noted that several issue ratings have eroded since earlier in the year. Approval of Trump’s handling of immigration has dropped nine points since February. Ratings on the situation in the Middle East have fallen seven points, while approval of his handling of the economy is down six points. Since March, approval of Trump’s handling of the federal budget has dropped by 12 points and of the situation in Ukraine by 10 points.
Gallup said congressional approval stands at 14 percent, with disapproval at 80 percent. Republicans’ approval of the Republican-led Congress has fallen sharply since September, sinking to 23 percent from 54 percent.
