Several airlines both inside and outside of the U.S. said they were affected by a major recall of Airbus A320 models, after the company said on Friday that "intense solar radiation may corrupt data critical to the functioning of flight controls."

The software update needed to fix the problem would take around two hours per aircraft in most cases, and its necessity came to light after a JetBlue flight from Cancun to Newark suddenly lost altitude in October, Newsweek reported previously .

Newsweek reached out to Airbus for comment via email on Saturday.

The recall comes as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it expects the busiest Thanksgiving travel period in 15 years.
