A bystander shot and killed a dog mauling a woman Thanksgiving morning in Newark, authorities said.

Police responded at 9:10 a.m. to the 200 block of S. 9th Street after receiving a report that a dog had bitten a woman, officials said.

An armed citizen at the scene fired a handgun at the dog to stop the attack against the victim, who was taken to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Miranda said. The dog died at the scene.

The bystander who fired the handgun stayed with officers, Miranda said.

The incident remains under investigation, and “no further information is available,” according to police.
