Content: A train derailment in a rural area east of Cranbrook has prompted the evacuation of at least five properties. The incident occurred Saturday morning around 7 a.m. in the Regional District of East Kootenay.
Local authorities declared a state of emergency following the derailment, which involved multiple train cars. The affected area is located northwest of Bull River, near the Kootenay River and Fenwick Road. Residents of the five homes have been ordered to evacuate for safety reasons.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Canadian Pacific (CP) police conducted a tactical evaluation of the situation shortly after the derailment. Displaced residents have been advised to contact emergency support services for assistance.
According to Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), there were no reported injuries from the incident. The railway company stated that approximately 12 cars derailed, including some carrying wood products and tanker cars containing propane.
CPKC crews and equipment have been dispatched to the site to assess the situation and begin cleanup efforts. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has also sent two investigators to the scene to gather information and evaluate the circumstances surrounding the derailment.
