After clearing a million people in 2021, four years sooner than expected, Edmonton’s population boom has continued.

As part of their onboarding orientation on Tuesday, city councillors were presented with administration’s take on to how to manage the city’s growing pains. From 2022 to 2024 the city added another 100,000 people — a 10 per cent increase in population in two years. And according to administration, that pace of growth isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

“When the city plan was being developed in 2019, it was anticipated that the 1.25 population threshold wouldn’t be achieved until about 2032,” said deputy city manager Kim Petrin. “Today, the chief economist is forecasting that threshold could be reached in 2027, five years earlier.
