Danielle Smith and her UCP will not do better in Edmonton and even Calgary until the premier gets the hardcore of her party under control.
The highwire Smith is walking was very evident at her party’s AGM this weekend at Edmonton’s Expo Centre.
Smith said she wanted to make a breakthrough in Edmonton where the UCP has won just one seat in the past two elections. But on Friday, delegates booed Smith as she tried to put a positive spin on her deal with Prime Minister Mark Carney for a pipeline to the West Coast. Then many cheered and gave a standing ovation to Jeffrey Rath of the separatist Alberta Prosperity Project when, during a bearpit, he asked Smith and some of her minister whether they favoured a “free and independent Alberta.”
