Despite the benefits social media is alleged to have brought to information sharing and community building, I think we should call it for what it is: an epic dumpster fire and a failed social experiment.

The problem is that we can't seem to find the extinguisher.

Last week, a lawsuit brought by U.S. school districts against social media giants — including Meta, YouTube, Google and Snapchat — alleges that they knew how detrimental their platforms can be to teens, but chose to quash the information anyway.

Meta, in particular, had found a causal link between those who deactivated their Facebook account and lower levels of depression, anxiety, loneliness and social comparison, but allegedly stopped the research. Such findings wouldn't be good for market share or the bottom line.
