In western Montrose County, most health care services are at least 90 minutes away.
The region has several long-standing towns: Nucla (590 people), Naturita (481 people), Redvale (405 people) and, while technically part of San Miguel County, Norwood (523 people).
“… there are so many gaps and barriers in the west end of Montrose County and in Norwood,” Tri-County Health Network Community Programs Co-Executive Director Amy Rowan said. “There are no home health services in the area. There are no hospice services in the area. EMS services are limited; Nucla has one ambulance.”
Despite their distance from hospitals and many other “given” amenities, the frontier communities have maintained many of the most essential health care services.
