NATO has been compelled to take swift action following the incursion of four Russian fighter jets near the Polish border. The MiG-31 aircraft were reported to have approached Russia's western border, prompting immediate responses from both Poland and Germany, according to sources cited by Bild am Sonntag. In response to the situation, Poland and Germany placed their air defence systems on high alert. Germany activated two Patriot air defence systems stationed at Rzeszow Airport, a key hub for Western military aid to Ukraine. A spokesperson for the German Air Force confirmed, "There was activity in Russian airspace on Friday, and the air defense forces deployed in Poland responded. This included the two Patriot systems of the Air Force." Despite the heightened alert and military readiness, the Russian jets eventually returned to their base, as reported by Bild. The Polish military also took precautionary measures by scrambling fighter jets overnight on Friday. This action was in response to ongoing Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, which included strikes on Kyiv that resulted in two fatalities and 27 injuries. The Polish military stated that their response was "aimed at securing the airspace and its protection, especially in areas adjacent to the threatened regions." On Saturday, the Polish Armed Forces returned their ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems to standard operational activity. However, they emphasised their commitment to vigilance, stating, "We continue to monitor the situation in Ukraine on an ongoing basis and remain in constant readiness to safeguard Polish airspace." The situation underscores the ongoing tensions in the region and the readiness of NATO allies to respond to potential threats.
