There is a lot to admire about Dylan Cease, the newest, richest Blue Jays pitcher and yet, surprisingly, an awful lot to wonder about. He’s not exactly Randy Johnson or Bob Gibson. He’s not one of those elite-elite pitchers. He’s a very strong major-league pitcher but, oddly, a contradiction of sorts. He’s dependable in never having missed a big league start and not so dependable in never having made an impressive post-season start. His playoff earned run average is 8.74. His team’s record in his playoff starts: 0-4. In his five years starting in the big leagues, he just about leads all of baseball in strikeouts and, at the same time, he leads all of baseball in batters walked. His ERA in two seasons with the contending San Diego Padres was not much different than those of Kevin Gaus
