A simple idea shared by a local community member sparked an outpouring of generosity this month, resulting in 40 complete, shelf-stable Thanksgiving meal kits for Emporia students and families served through the district’s Spartan Stop.

The organizer stumbled upon the idea online and initially planned to assemble just a few holiday meals. But after posting the idea online, donations rolled in quickly.

“I’ve been watching this come together and it was the coolest idea,” said Heather Wagner, Student and Family Resource Specialist with Emporia Public Schools. “I love how it just got bigger and bigger.”

In total, 24 donors contributed through Venmo, PayPal, cash and checks, raising about $1,000. The organizer shopped strategically over two weeks, taking advantage of sales at Dillons and Ald
