NEWARK - Knocking on doors, handing out flyers and cold-calling constituents is over and the actual work now begins for Amina Bey, who took the City Council dais on Monday to serve Newark’s Central Ward, which had gone without representation for 18 months.
Supporters packed City Council chambers to observe Bey’s ceremonial oath of office on Monday morning. The Newark Arts High School choir performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before various speakers expressed their congratulations and offered words of advice to the new councilwoman.
Following a close November special election race, Bey won the Central Ward seat by a 98-vote margin with 3,302 votes, or 39.4% of the 8,381 votes cast. Bey, who wore a headscarf during her oath of office, is the first Muslim elected to the governing body i
