Three Guelph teens were initially arrested at gunpoint in what turned out to be teens playing with cap guns.

Guelph police said a motorist reported Thursday, just before 9 p.m., people were pointing firearms out of the window of a car on Edinburgh Road South.

Tactical officers found the car near Edinburgh Road South and Allan Avenue. They conducted a “high-risk” traffic stop and ordered the occupants out at gunpoint. A search of the vehicle found three cap guns.

The three men — aged 17 to 19 — were cautioned for possessing weapons for a dangerous purpose and released without charges.

“Fake or replica firearms can cause tremendous upset if witnesses believe they are real. Officers responding to such calls must respond as if the involved firearms are real until proven otherwise,” police
