In a surprise development, the owner of the SUV police shot three bullets at as it raced toward their roadblock during a weapons call on a back road on Walpole Island testified Friday he, and not the accused on trial, was driving at the time.
Joseph Kennedy, 54, from Chippewas of the Thames First Nation near London, was arrested March 2 as tactical officers swarmed Walpole Island and charged with assaulting two police officers with a weapon, Robert Miskokomon of Walpole Island and Carlos Teixeira of Lambton OPP, dangerous driving, and prohibited driving. He pleaded not guilty to all four charges last week as an estimated four-day trial got underway at the Sarnia courthouse.
