A 45-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving after police said tests revealed he was driving with more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

Guelph police said that just after 7 p.m. on Friday, officers patrolling near Gordon Street and Arkell Road saw a pickup truck being driven erratically and pulled the driver over. Officers said they immediately detected a strong odour of alcohol and could see open and sealed cans of beer inside.

The driver was arrested and taken to the police station, where tests determined he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol.

With the impaired driving charge, the man’s licence was automatically suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.

He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 16.
