RICHMOND, Va. — Despite vetoes from Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, lawmakers in Virginia are once again introducing legislation to legalize the recreational sales of marijuana as a new governor will take office .
The Joint Commission to Oversee the Transition of the Commonwealth into a Cannabis Retail Market is expected to introduce a proposal to lay out an amended framework on Tuesday. Chairman Del. Paul Krizek told WUSA9 that the plan will reflect extensive discussions that strike the right balance on creating an adult-use retail market that promotes public safety and public health.
The proposed plan, which hopes to start by November 2026, will include support for small businesses, a competitive tax rate, and the elimination of an opt-out option.
