CINCINNATI —

The last supermoon of the year will be visible in the sky later this week and the Cincinnati Observatory will be hosting a watch party to celebrate.

Pre-registration for tickets has sold out but tickets remain available at $15 for adults and $10 for children and members.

According to NASA, the term “supermoon” was coined in 1979 and occurs when a full moon coincides with its closest approach to Earth, giving it a larger and brighter image.

Supermoons are not rare but make for an enjoyable stargazing experience.

NASA scientists say that at its closest point, the supermoon can appear up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than the faintest moon of the year.
