In an incident Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen said "never should have happened," a traffic stop escalated and the passenger, a convicted felon, was shot and wounded by BCSO deputies.

John Paul Baca, 36, went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A warrant for his arrest was been issued, charging him with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, trafficking a controlled substance (three counts), and aggravated assault on with a deadly weapon (four counts). Baca already had an outstanding warrant on drug charges.

On Nov. 12, BCSO deputies had stopped a white Mazda pickup near Central Avenue for not having a valid registration. The driver also had a revoked driver's license.
