Syracuse, N.Y. – A man who was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison in 2021 for a murder in Syracuse was given the same sentence Monday after he was found guilty a second time.

His first conviction was overturned in 2024 because a potential juror had nodded his head instead of giving verbal confirmation that he could remain unbiased.

Miequin Cheese, 34, got a new trial and, last month, the jury found him guilty of fatally shooting Lakquan Golden, 26, nine times on a porch full of people at a Rockland Avenue home in June 2019.

Judge Matthew Doran sentenced Cheese to 25 years to life in prison for murder and 15 years for two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, for a total sentence of 40 years to life. Cheese will get credit for time already served.
