Action News Investigates has learned contractors in Western Pennsylvania hit gas and other utility lines daily. This is despite a law that says you must call 811 before digging underground.

The National Transportation Safety Board found that a house in Plum exploded in 2008 due to a corroded gas line struck by a contractor five years earlier.

Three years ago, an explosion at the old YWCA building in McKeesport injured two people. Investigators said the contractor never called 811, the number for Pennsylvania One Call.

Pennsylvania law requires contractors to contact One Call before any underground digging. That allows them to mark utility lines and avoid an accident.
