IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - New research out of the University of Iowa is reshaping what it means to live with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that affects the lungs and other organs and can be fatal.
For 21-year-old Grace Lidgett, those advancements mean her everyday life looks nothing like the prognosis she once received.
From running on the track to dancing with friends, Lidgett tries to live like any other young adult. But behind those moments is a lifelong fight with cystic fibrosis — a condition that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, leading to frequent infections and declining lung function.
“Basically my body just creates a ton of mucus - it traps bacteria which leads to lung infections, and slowly, over time my lung function will deteriorate,” she said.
