The holiday season is here once again and police in the El Paso-Las Cruces area are cautioning residents to be on guard for porch pirates looking to steal home deliveries.

The theft of delivery packages, commonly known as "porch piracy," tends to increase during the holiday season partly because more packages are being delivered and some deliveries occur after sunset due to the shorter daylight in winter, a Las Cruces Police Department news release stated.

The U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General reported that about 25% of U.S. recipients have been victims of package theft, with 58 million packages estimated to have been stolen in 2024. The cost of most individual stolen goods ranged from $50 to $200.
