The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning people across America about fake donation requests ahead of Giving Tuesday on Dec. 2.

Giving Tuesday is a global annual event which started in 2012 to celebrate generosity and encourage people to give back on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

In 2024, Giving Tuesday reported a record-breaking year with $3.6 billion in donations and 36.1 million participants. Since its launch, more than $18.5 billion has been donated throughout the U.S.

However, scammers are willing to take advantage of this event by contacting people via phone, text or email and claiming to be a legit organization asking for money. Therefore, it’s important for people to make sure their money goes to real causes that matter to them instead of a scammer.
