WASHINGTON — Downtown D.C., near Farragut Square, has become the site of a growing memorial for two West Virginia National Guard members who were shot in an ambush-style attack the day before Thanksgiving.
Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, succumbed to her injuries, while Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in serious condition, according to West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey.
The suspect, identified by police as 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, likely faces murder charges following Beckstrom's death.
Throughout the day, a solemn stream of people paused at the makeshift memorial near the Farragut West Metro stop, where the shooting occurred. Amidst flowers, flags, and prayers are pictures of Spc. Beckstrom and Staff Sgt. Wolfe.
