PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association said police made 54 arrests for driving under the influence during the Thanksgiving holiday period.
From 12 p.m. on Nov. 26 to 6 a.m. on Dec. 1, 54 DUI arrests were made between the 38 police departments across the state and the Rhode Island State Police.
RISP deployed the BAT Mobile , which is a blood alcohol testing unit, on Thanksgiving day to catch impaired drivers.
RISP said that t he first offense for driving under the influence of liquor or drugs carries several penalties:
Possible jail sentence of up to one year at the ACI.
Mandatory license suspension from three to eighteen months.
Mandatory community service from 10 to 60 hours.
Fines of not less than $100, nor more than $500
