BEAVER LAKE, Neb. —

Saturday evening, a Beaver Lake home went up in flames. Two days later, it's still smoking.

Wind from the storm sent cinders flying through the air while the cedar cabin burned. Incident Commander Joe Spicciati said the call came in just before 6 p.m. for an accidental fire possibly caused by a wood burner.

50 responders from nearby Murray, Plattsmouth and Nehawka, along with Cass County Emergency Management, fought the flames until 8 a.m.

The cold and snow were a blessing and a curse — keeping the fire from spreading but freezing water on the firefighters' gear, weighing them down. Spicciati said two of his crew were treated for overexertion but have fully recovered.
