MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - A group gathered Monday evening on the Murfreesboro Plaza to protest what they call censorship at Rutherford County libraries, ahead of a Rutherford County Library System (RCLS) board vote that could remove more books from shelves.
The rally was organized by Murfreesboro Indivisible and the Rutherford County Library Alliance. It was held to challenge the removal of books considered controversial and to oppose a potential vote by the RCLS board to eliminate the Library Bill of Rights.
Over the past year, controversial books have been pulled from library shelves after Tennessee lawmakers revised state law broadening the definition of obscenity prohibited in school libraries.
