CLEVELAND — Elyria firefighters responded Monday afternoon to a house fire that racked up $40,000 in damage, Fire Chief Joseph Pronesti said .
Crews were called to the 800 block of Rosewood Drive at around 12:45 p.m. and found a fire in the basement that was quickly spreading upward. They were able to contain the fire to the basement, but the first and second floors of the house took on heavy damage from the smoke and heat.
No injuries were reported. Officials say the home is uninhabitable.
Crews remained on scene for more than two hours. The Elyria Fire Department was assisted by Sheffield Village Fire and Lifecare.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Red Cross is helping the family with emergency lodging.
