DES MOINES, Iowa —
Coming soon to a building at Des Moines University: the first S.A.F.E. Center of Iowa.
The nonprofit and Polk County leaders announced a partnership last month with DMU.
"We finally will have our first home," says Executive Director Shannon Knudsen, who also works as a sexual assault nurse examiner.
The SAFE Center will include multiple services for the hundreds in Central Iowa who find themselves reeling after abuse.
"This way, they can come right there and know that from the moment they walk in the door, there's going to be somebody there who's trained with that expertise, that they're not going to have to feel like they're being judged or tell their story all over," Knudsen says.
The center will have medical and forensic exam space, rooms for speaking to police
