Police were investigating two break-ins in southwest Waverly the previous weekend, we read on the front page of the Dec. 2, 1975, issue of the Bremer County Independent.

The V & W laundromat, behind Jack & Jill, was entered through a broken window and had between $90 and $100 taken from a cash drawer, and the front door of the Peters Vicker station on Fourth Street was pried open and $100 to $120 stolen.

Also front-page news was that the Bremer-Butler county area had its first diabetes screening, with 302 people aged 2 to 83 from 15 area communities showing up to be tested.

“Of that number, 14 persons reacted positively to the test. […] Over half the people tested indicated they had blood relatives with diabetes and nearly half of those tested were overweight.”
