Sacramento’s first school, opened in 1849 at 3rd and I streets, closed after heavy rain damaged the Gold Rush-era city. Weeks later, the 1850 flood left streets under six feet of water and led to the creation of Sacramento’s levee system. The school never reopened, marking one of the city’s earliest encounters with severe flooding.
