HERMANTOWN — In choosing a Northland law enforcement agency to build his career, the Hermantown Police Department offered a unique advantage for Lucas Hedin.

The 16-member force included two K-9 units, with both dogs nearing a decade of service, and Hedin had a strong interest in filling that role since he became an officer four years ago.

“I think it’s just all the extra work and training that you get to experience having the dog,” he explained. “You also get called to all the most interesting calls when you’re working and get to help out a lot of the other departments in the area.”

Two years after joining the department, Hedin recently hit the streets with his new partner, Kylo, an energetic, 15-month-old Belgian shepherd from Germany.
