The report card is out: Impact-resistant shingles get new ratings for the first time in years

TEXAS, USA — Hail is unfortunately a way of life in Texas.

As I reported earlier this year , the Insurance Information Institute reported that for the 10th straight year , the Lone Star State was tops for having the most major hail events.

Texans have been combatting all that hail by purchasing the most impact-resistant shingles in the country by far. A new report by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety estimates Texans snatched up 43% of all the stronger shingles that were sold in the U.S. last year.

And just for perspective, “the next closest is Colorado and Missouri at 10%," says Ian Giammanco, Ph.D., who is the Managing Director for Atmospheric Science at the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS).
