MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Monday marked the first day of jury selection for the Timothy Kennedy case in Mingo County.
Kennedy is charged with the murder of State Trooper Cory Maynard in June of 2023 that ended in a massive manhunt.
WSAZ spoke with Circuit Clerk Lonnie Hannah, who said that the jury pool was more than doubled, from the typical 50 - to 110. Hannah said the increase was due to the case being high-profile, one that he called “new territory.”
Fifty-five prospective jurors were screened Monday, with the rest slated for Tuesday.
Hannah said 24 jurors are needed from the pool. The final panel will be composed of 12 jurors and four alternates, giving eight jurors for attorneys to “strike.”
If a jury can be selected, then the trial can proceed next week.
If not, Hannah said
