HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 60-year-old man with more than 300 arrests allegedly bit a Honolulu police officer last week, just days after he was released on his recognizance in a case involving meth.
Tommy J. Chiles has 78 convictions.
The Honolulu prosecutor’s office said they were overruled after objecting to Chiles being released without having to post bail on Nov. 17 for the drug case.
Ten days later, Chiles allegedly bit the officer in Waikiki on Thanksgiving morning.
“Appalling” is the reaction from Nicholas Schlapak, president of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers, the police officers union.
“We’re extremely concerned with the background of the situation. We don’t understand how he was out on the streets,” Schlapak said.
