LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky fired the Southeastern Conference's longest-tenured coach, ending Mark Stoops' tenure in his 13th season with the Wildcats after back-to-back losing records Monday morning.
By Monday night, athletic director Mitch Barnhart announced the hiring of Stoops' replacement in Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein , 36, coming home to Kentucky where his father once played. This will be Stein's first head coaching job.
“Will Stein brings an outstanding track record of developing elite quarterbacks and leading some of the most dynamic and successful offenses in college football,” Barnhart said.
Kentucky became the sixth SEC program to change coaches this season , joining Auburn, Arkansas, Florida, LSU and Mississippi.
