A home designated "affordable" in Santa Fe can't be sold for more than $332,000. That's almost half the median price of a market-rate home in the city, according to recent figures .

Roman "Tiger" Abeyta, CEO of The Housing Trust, said it costs the same amount to build both homes.

"I don't get to tell the concrete company, 'These are affordable, so charge me less,' " he said, noting rising costs of materials and labor have made construction of affordable housing increasingly difficult.

The city could help The Housing Trust bridge the price gap for several homes in the Arroyo Oeste development in the south-side subdivision Tierra Contenta.
