Former Malawi national team striker Esau “Black Mamba” Kanyenda has revealed that he has been diagnosed with liver cancer in the United Kingdom, where he is currently based.
In a brief message posted on his verified Facebook page on Monday, the 43-year-old appealed for support, writing: “I’m fighting this. I need your prayers.”
Kanyenda, one of Malawi’s most celebrated exports, enjoyed an illustrious career playing for top international clubs such as FC Locomotive Moscow in Russia and Polokwane City FC in South Africa. Locally, he turned out for Dwangwa United and Mighty Wanderers.
Following his announcement, social media has been flooded with messages of encouragement and well-wishes as fans, fellow athletes and the wider football community rally behind him in his fight for recovery.
