A beloved figure in Toronto’s choral music community died Sunday, but his legacy will live on through a new scholarship for young musicians, a prominent music festival says.
The Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival has named a new scholarship for Giles Bryant, 91, a renowned organist and choir director, was also founder of the annual Christmas carol concert at St. Paul’s Bloor Street church.
Pam Allen, the music festival's executive director, worked with Bryant during his time as the festival’s artistic director from 1987 to 2019.
“He was the most amazing man,” she told CBC Radio's Here and Now .
“He had the best sense of humor. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He mentored thousands of musicians."
