BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — According to the University of Oxford’s Department of Biology , Western European hedgehogs have likely declined almost 30% across extensive parts of their range, and Long-eared hedgehogs are suspected to have declined over 30% in Europe.
The Environmental Crop Management said the creatures could go extinct by 2050 in some areas of the world.
Hedgehog breeders like Sara Roth are concerned about this. Roth breeds her hedgehogs right outside of Bowling Green, making her small creatures very comfortable while living with her. They often lie on their backs with their arms open when she picks them up.
“Everybody likes it when they roll in a ball, but this is trust, because they’re giving you their most vulnerable spot,” Roth said.
