COLUMBIA — The S.C. Department of Social Services has stopped accepting many new applications for the vouchers that help almost 50,000 children across the state get child care.

Described as a temporary pause caused by a delay and expected reduction in federal funding, the Dec. 1 change could be a significant blow to some families and child care centers if it drags on, advocates and facility operators said.
