The end is near. After a yearlong celebration of Akron’s 200th birthday, the city will have a bicentennial closing ceremony Saturday, Dec. 6.
The event will take place at 1 p.m. at Perkins Square on the Akron Children’s Hospital campus at West Bowery and West Exchange streets in the amphitheater outside Kay Jewelers Pavilion. Many residents might not realize it today, but this space was the original public square when Gen. Simon Perkins and Paul Williams filed the plat map Dec. 6, 1825, and co-founded the village.
The closing ceremony will include remarks from local historians and government officials. Mayor Shammas Malik will unveil a new city logo created by Pritt Entertainment Group. In case of bad weather, the ceremony will move indoors to the Considine Professional Building auditori
