Reconstructing Arthur Street with separated cycling lanes would remove on-street parking spots from Elmira’s downtown, and a local councillor wants the region to reconsider the revamp using the existing road layout.
Finding parking in the downtown, where businesses are located, can already be difficult at times, and decreasing the number of spots will only make it worse, said Woolwich Coun. Evan Burgess, following an open house last week that outlined two design options for Arthur Street, from South Street East to Riverside Drive.
The first option would remove more than a third (18 spots) of on-street parking on Arthur Street, between South Street East and Church Street, requiring property acquisition and tree removal.
Another option would keep 90 per cent (54 spots) of on-street parkin
