The Mets bolstered the back of their bullpen on Monday night with a splash, signing ex- Yankees closer Devin Williams to a three-year deal in free agency.
Will Sammon of The Athletic was first to report Williams’ deal with the Mets.
Williams’ contract is worth more than $50 million guaranteed with no opt-outs or options, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Since Edwin Díaz opted out and is still available in free agency, Williams could take over as the Mets’ closer in 2026. He struggled pitching in the ninth inning with the Yankees this past season, but has ample experience as an elite closer with the Brewers. That dates back to when Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns was at the helm in Milwaukee’s front office.
