CLEVELAND, Ohio — I allowed some dark thoughts to creep into my mind when 49ers backup quarterback Mac Jones ran onto the field to run out the clock on San Francisco’s 26-8 win over the Browns Sunday afternoon.
Jones, the former first-round pick who didn’t even finish out his rookie contract in New England, is 27 years old and is spending this season in the Kyle Shanahan QB school. He signed a two-year, $7 million deal in the offseason. He started eight games in place of the injured Brock Purdy this season.
Jones has gone 5-3, completed 69.6% of his passes and has 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.
