There was no conflict of interest in the process to award the 2027 Memorial Cup to the Guelph Storm.
So says the Canadian Hockey League after it received a formal request by the Kitchener Rangers to look into it this past Friday.
“All established procedures were followed,” the CHL told The Record, in an email. “We can state unequivocally that there was no conflict of interest, and we have full confidence in both the independence and expertise of the site selection committee.”
The Rangers and Guelph Storm were finalists to host the Memorial Cup and a five-person selection committee chose Guelph by a vote of 4-1 on Nov. 20.
Kitchener had moved on but felt uneasy when Hockey Canada announced a new three-year partnership deal with Guelph-based Sleeman Breweries this past Thursday.
